Case Study 1 : Sand Recovery Process

Example from : F. Baudequin (EDF France) Electrical Reclamation of Foundry Sand : in 'Fluidizacion y sistemas fluido/particula' - Girona 1990. 

 The electrical process of regeneration of polluted sands uses an electrically heated fluidized bed reactor. The reaction between air and organic substances ( or carbon covering particles) is a common combustion phenomenon which is considered as a particle-gas reaction with no size changes. This example is based on the data given by F. Baudequin (EDF France) in the paper published in 'Fluidizacion y sistemas fluido/particula' - Girona 1990.

 The problem studied here is proposed as an example and some of its conditions may differ from those of the EDF process.

 The aim of this exercise is to show how to use ERGUN program in order to design a new process. The example in hand is composed of a fluidized bed which is initially heated by the walls and needs to be studied in order to change to a new configuration with vertical heating canes (we call them tubes in this paper). On the other hand, we would like to study the possibility of using other of solids to cover a bigger field of application of the process. This problem includes the design of fluidized bed (hydrodynamic, and reaction aspects) as well as cyclones and heating tubes.

The figures on the right show the process unit to be designed and its data, as presented in the tutorial example-1. This process corresponds to a little unit of 25 KW initially designed to convert 1000 kg/h of polluted sand. Below, there are some principal data available on the process. Other data must be found by the user.

Case Study 2 : Zinc Roasting Process

The user is invited to work on a second Tutorial on the "Zinc Sulphide Roasting" with first steps of work already done. The figure beside shows a simplified scheme of the process as presented by "Avedesian".
