Co-supervised thesis

It is now possible to do a co-supervised thesis between a French higher education institution and a foreign counterpart. The co-supervision process aims at establishing and developing scientific collaboration between research laboratories by encouraging PhD student mobility.

  •  The total duration of the thesis (generally 3 years) is alternatively divided between the two partners.
  •  An agreement must be signed between the two institutions specifying registration details for each student such as : registration fees, health coverage, accommodations, length of research within the 3-year limit. Pedagogical guidelines must also be specified such as : names of the two supervisors, guidelines on choice of jury, country & language in which the thesis will be defended, process for delivering the two degrees.

Forms for the agreement may be obtained at the PhD school.

  •  Although the thesis is written in one language, an oral summary in the other language is also necessary.
  •  The thesis is only defended once before a joint jury, and a PhD degree is awarded by the French university and the equivalent degree by the other university.

Applicants should first make sure their master's degree is recognized for admission before beginning this process, in particular foreign degrees which need to be officially examined by the UTC's Scientific Council.
