French engineering degree (5 years)

This "engineering" degree is highly valued in France as it is equivalent to a high level master's degree. It's broken down into a 2 year cycle called "fundamental studies" followed by a 3 year cycle called "Major studies".

Fundamental studies ("tronc commun" 2 years)

This first cycle of studies (tronc commun) corresponds to the first two years of the French engineering degree and offers a large range of scientific and technical subjects.
The entrance level is the French baccalauréat (High School degree) or equivalent

Major studies ("études de branche" 3 years)

After a two year cycle in fundamental studies, engineering students choose a major that will last 3 years. The goal is to give students general, well-balanced training in the academic department of their choice.  Students choose inside each major an area of specialization during their final 3 semesters.
The entrance level for major studies is at least a two-year degree after A-levels ("baccalauréat").

Entrance level : 2 year college degree or equivalent

Industrial placement

During three years’ (six semesters’) major studies, two semesters’ internships outside UTC are indispensable for earning the engineering degree. The overall intern assessment by the company is taken into account as well as the student’s report. During the internship and project, the assignments to be carried out must be clearly defined so that the participation of the student can be evaluated.

INTERNSHIP ("Stage", French baccalaureate admission level plus 3 years university studies) : The internship essentially aims to bring the student into contact with the real industrial world, which allows students not only to apply their knowledge acquired at the university but also to develop their aptitude of teamwork participation in order to design or organize the production.

PROJECT
("Projet", French baccalaureate admission level plus 4,5 years university studies) : At this level, the trainee engineers have completed their university courses. The project is their last course module which must enable them to put into application the knowledge they have acquired during their studies in their chosen fields. Students must assume personal responsibilites on a specific industrial subject corresponding to their chosen specialization.

FORMAL ASPECTS AND REMUNERATION
: As a general rule, the university establishes an agreement with the host company. Students are paid indemnities or wages, which depends on the company. During this period, students are required to comply with the company rules, especially the confidentiality regulations.

Coherent packages of credit courses in English

Each academic department has designed a coherent package of credit courses in English to enable non-francophone international students to undertake a period of study at UTC and to obtain credits. This is offered to "exchange and degree seeking students" both at the French engineering degree (diplôme d'ingénieur) and the Master's degree (Master en sciences et technologie).

The majority of the courses at UTC are taught in French. Nevertheless, each academic department offers a coherent package of credit courses in English. These packages are designed for students having completed at least two years of studies past their college degree (if this one is equivalent to the French "baccalauréat"). Students fulfilling a small set of recquirements (i.e. e.g. completing sucesfully a package) may be awarded the Université de Technologie de Compiègne Bachelor of Sciences and Technology.

Université de Technologie de Compiègne Bachelor of Sciences and Technology (UTC-BSc)

Background of the UTC-BSc

Many of UTC's international partner institutions award BSc and MSc degrees to their students. In the present French context of engineering education, only MSc-degrees ("Diplômes d'Ingénieur") may be awarded to French students by UTC (as well as doctorates, habilitations etc.). In order to maintain UTC's attractiveness to international partner institutions and their students, UTC may award an UTC-BSc to international exchange students.

Recquirements

The Université de Technologie de Compiègne Bachelor of Sciences and Technology (UTC-BSc) (Diplôme Certificat d’Études Supérieures de Technologie de l’UTC) may be awarded to students studying at UTC in the framework of an international exchange program. Students having achieved 60 ECTS credit points (ECTS-CP) at UTC in the following categories may apply for the UTC-BSc :

30 credits from lectures and 30 credits from a project
  • Scientific knowledge and techniques and methods : at least 18 credits
  • Communication, culture & technology, management : at least 8 credits
  • Internship or lab project : 30 credits
60 credits from lectures
  • Scientific knowledge and techniques and methods : at least 36 credits
  • Communication, culture & technology, management : at least 16 credits

In order to apply, students may first check whether their home institution has established an exchange agreement with UTC. If such an agreement exists, they may send an application to UTC via the local coordinator of their home institution. For this purpose, the standard application formular has to be completed. "I apply for the Université de Technologie de Compiègne Bachelor of Sciences and Technology (UTC-BSc)." should be marked at the bottom of the course list. The UTC-BSc is free of charges.

Framework of the UTC-BSc

In order to be able to attract students who seek to learn the French language in parallel to their engineering studies in Compiègne, a welcome-package simplifying the first steps in Compiègne is set-up. This welcome-package consists of
Detailed information on administrative and every-day needs (website in preparation)
