Competitiveness clusters

UTC is heavily involved in two competitiveness clusters : Innovation in transport (I-trans) and Industries and agro-resources (IAR). UTC is playing a leadership role by occupying some of the key management positions and by the works of its research units (7 projects in 2006 for a budget of more than 10 million euros).

  •  IAR : Industries and agro-resources

  •  I-trans : Innovation in transport

Industries and agro-resources : the valorisation of plant use

The valorization of plant use for competitive industrial innovation will soon become an essential field of research

The "Industry and agro-resources" competitiveness cluster proposes a strategy for the complete valorization of plant use. Its development targets new and emerging markets based on the use of all plant components for industrial, innovative and competitive goals.

In a perspective of sustainable development, the cluster wishes to meet society’s demand for renewable products, processes which are more respectful of the environment and participation in the battle against climate change. It also wishes to take advantage of Picardy’s agricultural potential, and to organize the rise of the "plant sector", by orientating our thinking towards the adaptation of agroresources, new technological orientations and suitable education.

This cluster involves four major industrial sectors :

  •  pharmaceutical, personal hygiene product, fine chemistry and cosmetics
  •  agromaterials
  •  energy
  •  human and animal feeding

Innovations in transport

I-trans wishes to become an European model

"I-trans" is a competitiveness cluster grouping the training and research companies and organizations of the Nord-Pas de Calais and Picardy regions. The ambition of the "i-Trans" cluster is to create the first European cluster with worldwide recognition, for the conception, construction, competitive running and the maintenance of innovative ground transport systems, particularly rail transport, in terms of market shares, innovation, growth and attractiveness.
Two UTC / CNRS (1) research units are actively participating in innovative research projects initiated within the framework of the competitiveness cluster :

Roberval : Acoustics, Mechanics and Materials
Heudiasyc  : Heuristics and Complex Systems Diagnostics

(1) National Center for Scientific Research.

Cluster with an international exposure is targeting excellence in the field of innovative transport, I-trans has defined three strategic goals :

  •  railway interoperability
  •  freight/passenger intermodality
  •  intelligent transport systems
