Postdoctoral Position in Polymer Science - POURVU

A joint postdoctoral position in the labs of Prof. Fahmi Bedoui ( and and Prof. Abraham Joy ( is currently open. The project is targeted towards the synthesis of optimum polymer compositions that undergo hydration induced phase separation with controllable segregated domain size and distribution. Once these microstructural, physical and photochemical studies have been established, protocols will be developed to establish photoirradiation of phase separated polymer thin films as a viable alternative for fabricating nano-porous membranes. Due to the importance of porous membranes in several vital applications, novel methods to control pore size and distributions and also methods that improve the scale-up of these devices would be a transformative advance. The proposed studies can provide the framework to utilize photoirradiation of phase separated thin films as a means to create well-ordered porous membranes for applications in medicine such as dialysis membranes and drug delivery. The post-doc will spend the first three to six (3 to 6) months in the Joy Lab to optimize the synthesis, characterization, phase separation and photo efficiency of various compositions of photoresponsive polymers. While in the Bedoui Lab the postdoc will concentrate on the morphological characterization by direct observation (TEM, AFM) and implicit observation (SAXS/WAXS). Preliminary X-Ray data will be done on site, however when necessary SAXS/WAXS measurements will be carried at synchrotron facilities. The candidate is also expected to conduct permeability measurements of such polymer films.

Required qualification :

  • Interest and ability to work in an interdisciplinary research environment and across disciplines ; teaming with material scientists, engineers and chemists.
  • Good English communication skills, including development/delivery of presentations to technical and non-technical audiences are required.
  • Ability to write coherent and compelling scientific documents
  • Candidate should preferably have experience in polymer synthesis, and/or organic synthesis, and polymer characterization.
  • Ability to travel as the the candidate, will have to spend 3 to 6 months in the Polymer Science Department of the University of Akron
