Placements and International activities (Master)

Students can carry out a short placement either in one of UTC’s (or partners’) research laboratories or in a corporate setting.

First year

During the M1 year, students can carry out a short placement (4 weeks: 'ST01') either during the inter-semester break January-February, or end July (when the spring semester has ended). The placement can be carried out in one of UTC's (or partners') research laboratories or in another R&D establishment or in a corporate setting, after an agreement by the training course supervisor.

Students are allowed to seek their placements and make proposals to their training supervisors, as per the following schedule:

  • early December for a placement starting in the inter-semester break
  • end May for a placement staring end July

Second Year

Students must carry out an end-of-studies projects in their second year at Master's level (M2). Depending on the student's profile and professional objectives, the project can be carried out in one of UTC's (or partners') research laboratories or in another R&D establishment or in a corporate setting. If he/she seeks their own placement it will be in compliance with rules set by their training supervisor (time allotted, research topics, France or abroad).

Placements outside the course schedule bounds or during a break in studies are also possible but it should be noted that they cannot be validated in terms of ECTS credit points.

Placement dissertation jury

Validation of placements and end-of-studies projects is the responsibility of a jury comprising personalities in the specialty and possible external members (industrialists, research scientists from the host laboratories ...).

The jury will take into account the evaluations provided by the host companies and/or laboratories, the placement/project dissertation and the oral expose, quality of the tools used for the presentation (PowerPoint®, etc., posters) and will also seek the opinion of the work supervisors as to overall behaviour during the placement/project.

For students doing a Master's degree in parallel to the engineering diploma cursus, the placement may lead to one or two reports and one or two juries depending on the majors and specialties involved.

An international dimension is also very important for the Master's degree and UTC policy, both in terms of hosting stays by foreign students coming to France and Compiegne and enabling our students to do part of their training abroad.

Foreign partnerships and double degree arrangements

The partnership agreements signed by UTC with various foreign universities enable cross exchanges to attend courses, spend semesters aboard and/or carry out placement in their laboratories, under certain conditions. Some examples:

  • The partnership between the French Universities of Technology (UT) and the University of Shanghai (UTSEUS) which involves both training and research UTC acts as host institution in the joint engineering degree course and over the two years of the Master's degree courses.
  • UTC acts as host university for Master's degree students from the most prestigious Chinese Universities (in the framework of the Chinese Scientific Council (CSC) International Programme.
  • The agreement signed with the University of Lebanon (UL) on the theme systems control and which will be extended to include interacting systems and biomedical technologies.

Erasmus Programmes

UTC and its partners are committed (or engaged in discussions) to integrate the Erasmus Mundus programme. When these programmes become operational, they will allow the students to carry out a fraction of their cursus or their placements in the partner host universities.

  • Depending on the profile of their professional project, certain students can benefit from the ALISTORE network, notably to carry out their placement in one of the partner laboratories.
  • The UTC User Experience UxD specialty is involved in an Intensive Erasmus Program with a focus on design which welcomes between 80-100 students every year in Courtrai (Belgium) for a two week session. This Programme has just been renewed by the European Commission (EC) authorities.
