Specialty - Sound and Vibration Engineering (AVI)

The “Sound and Vibration Engineering” specialty (AVI) provides the students with the skills needed to understand and control noise abatement and vibratory phenomena occurring in mechanical engineering sectors (automotive industry, aeronautics, aerospace, naval, railway, ...), in the buildings but also in multimedia.

Program

The basic (core) training in mechanical engineering is completed by several courses in sound and vibrations, covering theoretical, experimental and numerical methods applied daily in companies.

The new program established in 2017 will strengthen the links with our industrial partners, and will offer a new course in acoustical design (DS01).

The following topics are taught: fundamental and applied acoustics, vibrations, signal processing, structural dynamics, room acoustics, numerical and experimental methods, noise abatement, acoustical design.

In addition, research projects are proposed to prepare the students for the professional context and teamwork.

Academic staff

Sound and vibration courses are given mainly by lecturers from the UTC Roberval laboratory (associated with the CNRS). There is also a close collaboration with industrial and academic partners, in the automobile sector (car and equipment manufacturers), in aeronautics (Airbus, Snecma, Turbomeca), in the space sector (Astrium), in the buildings (Alhyange), ...

Equipment

The following equipment is made available:

  • Coupled anechoic and reverberant rooms for sound insulation measurement
  • A laboratory to characterize sound absorbing materials
  • A platform to test structural vibrations (3D laser vibrometer, modal analysis software)
  • 2 test rigs to study in duct noise, for aircraft engines, automobile and building air conditioning systems
  • A semi-anechoic room
  • Aeroacoustic and structural acoustic softwares

Placements and industrial relations

UTC students spend over 24 weeks in placements (this takes place in semester 3) and a 24 week end-of-studies project (in semester 6) in companies dealing with environment, buildings and manufacturing sectors (aeronautics, automobile, railroad, nuclear industries...). Some of them are proposed in foreign countries.

International

At least 50% of the students from AVI specialty spend a 6 months in one of UTC's partner universities : North America (USA: Virginia Tech..., Canada: Sherbrooke and Montreal), South America (Brazil: Unicamp, Itajuba), Europe (Sweden: Chalmers TU, Denmark: TU Delft, Germany: TU Berlin, Italy: Torino, Milano...).

Professional openings and Career prospects

The UTC AVI graduates can move from being NVH experts (Noise Vibration and Harshness) to team managers after only a few years' professionnal experience, either in SMEs (service sector, automobile and aeronautical...) or with large industrial corporations oil industries, medical instruments...

60% of job opportunities follow the final internship in companies like: Acoem, Airbus, Alstom, CSTB, Daimler, DCNS, Dyson, PSA, Renault, Siemens, Saint Gobain, Valeo...

100% of students find a job within 3 months once graduated.

Further Education

AVI graduates can also be accepted for PhD studies at the UTC Roberval laboratory, financed via a ministerial grant, or the CIFRE industrial contracts, along two thematic lines:

  • Vibroacoustics and sound absorbing materials

  • Aeroacoustics and sound propagation in the air conditioning systems or aircraft engines

› The above courses and other, shorter modules whether leading to a diploma award or not, can be obtained in the UTC Continuous Education scheme or via the Professional experience validation scheme (VAE).

Claptone software

The sound and vibration team offers you a free download of the CLAPTONE software. CLAPTONE is a time-frequency acquisition and analysis software developed at UTC. It is used in several courses of acoustics and vibrations.

The application allows:

  • Acquisition of data by the sound card of the computer
  • Data analysis (real time spectrum analyser, oscilloscope)
  • Export of signals acquired for external processing
