Specialty - Integrated technological systems (GU-STI)

The GU-STI specialty focuses on gaining better understanding and control of environmental and social issues at an urban scale, commonly referred to as sustainable urban development. The methodology integrates questions of transportation of goods, persons, water, energy, etc., in cities. Training examines the elements that constitute a city (hydraulic, etc.). It will be their job to design, implement and manage complex urban infrastructures.

Programme

There are two main thrusts in the pedagogy:

  • training includes network modelling (used for water, wastes, fuel distribution ...) and transport systems.
  • training also underlines "integrative" methods that take account of the highly heterogeneous aspects of urban systems.

The GSU-STI specialty covers:

  • OR (operational research), combinatory organisation: where the students will become familiar with the complex level of algorithms involved and have a close analysis of graph theory and its applications.
  • Renewable energies: solar thermal energy, photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, biomass, micro-hydro power on both single building and territorial scales.
  • Automation, control, regulations and smart buildings: the communication network linking the various building equipment units.
  • Fuzzy logic: concepts and applications: aids to decision from data which is often contradictory and not always objective.
  • Decision-taking and auto-learning protocols: extraction of information from data to build relevant decision-making policies.

Research

Urban engineering research combines two highly innovative aspects - on one hand, the city (seen specially and technically using an engineer's viewpoint) and, on the other the social, human aspects.

The specialty therefore trains its students in urban engineering tools and methodology which can also open the way to future research work.

Equipment

GSU-STI students have access to the following training-intensive software packages: AutoCAD, AutoDESK, Revit, illustrator, ArcGis, Matlab, ..

Placements and Industrial Relations

The placements can take place in design offices (programming of large scale infrastructures), urban planning authorities, or with urban operators (energy, water, transport ...). The mission often combine pluridisciplinary and modelling techniques.

International

UTC students are encouraged to spend a semester abroad. Several destinations correspond to the STI philosophy (Canada, Sweden, Chile, Sweden ...).

Further Education

UTC also proposes:

  • a Master's degree in "ICTs for autonomous co-operating systems/ mechatronic systems and advanced mechanical engineering" 

  • a PhD in Urban System Engineering

› The above courses and other, shorter modules whether leading to a diploma award or not, can be obtained in the UTC Continuous Education scheme or via the Professional experience validation scheme (VAE).
