Financial support for PhD studies

Registration of a student for PhD studies at UTC is only possible if the doctoral school is assured that the studies will be financed, whatever the source, for the duration of the thesis work. Sources are varied: a grant from the mlnistry in charge of Research, or from the Picardie Regional authorities, or via the CIFRE thesis, or a project with specific private or public finance, or by an association or a foundation, government grants …

The doctoral contract

A doctoral contract is a time-limited public law contract with a duration of 3 years. It enables students registered for a PhD degree to avail of a single contract with the same guarantees covered by any standard employment contract, as well as a preparation for access to the workplace.

The contract may be prolonged by mutual agreement for a maximum duration of one year if exceptional circumstances involving the research work can be justified, or for medical health reasons.

For the PhD student carrying out full-time research, the monthly gross allowance salary is 1,685 euros minimum but they will be paid 2,024.70 euros if additional tasks are performed.

The French National Association for Science PhDs (ANDES)

Several institutions, associations, foundations can help finance training in research among which ANDES (Association Nationale des Docteurs ès Sciences) whose role it is to gather and update inter alia all available finding aids.

Picardie Regional grant

NB - By Parliamentary vote, the number of Regions in France will be effectively reduced, as of Jan. 1, 2016. Picardie is now part of the single entity: Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie.

The Picardie regional executive council for Picardie is strongly supportive of research projects developed jointly by UTC scientists and those from various engineering schools such as IPKB and ESIEE, from the Region's teaching hospitals, from the INRA and INERIS research establishments and the Technology Transfer Centres (CVG, CTCPA).

Important collaborative ventures have been set in motion with research trams at nearby universities (URCA Reims, Rouen, Lille, Artois Littoral, Valenciennes coinciding with the recognition of two world class competitivity clusters in Picardie : Industries and Agro-resources (IAR) and i-Trans (shared with the formerly separate department Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

The priority themes explored are:

  • Agro-resources: this theme aims at investigation the scientific aspects as needed for the world class competitivity cluster "IAR"
  • Intermodal transportation and energy: this priority axis aims at supporting projects that encompass integrated systems used for applications and large-scale projects as can be found and implement in the i-Trans programmes
  • Mechanical engineering, materials, clean and safe processes
  • Health sector needs and life sciences
  • Public action, economic and social systems
  • Education, apprenticeship schemes and technologies

Each priority axis includes training schemes and packages, research activities (basic and applied), going as far as a marketable development phase. This form of support for research is duly completed by "white projects" for teams that are not working in one of the priority themes.

The total number of research grants provided by the Picardie Regional Executive authority should increase considerably over the next few years.

The CIFRE partnership research contracts (CIFRE, short for Industrial Contracts for Training in Research) managed by the ANRT (Association Nationale de la Recherche Technique) for the ministry in charge of Higher Education and Research.

CIFRE contracts allow enterprises to recruit young Bac+5 students for R&D work leading to a doctoral degree. Three partners - an enterprise, a laboratory and a young student.

The procedure was created in 1981; over 10 000 PhD students have followed this path successfully, with its three partners - an enterprise, a young PhD candidate and a host laboratory. For the duration of the CIFRE agreement, the PhD candidate receives an annual flat rate grant paid by the ANRT.

  • The enterprise must be of under French law (excluding associations, public establishments, GIP ...). The subject must be seen in a perspective of economic development.
  • The candidate - all nationalities can apply- must be at least 26 years old, holder of a recently awarded BAC+5 diploma and must not have been committed to doctoral studies for more than a year. The CIFRE is seen as a first professional experience ... and there is a mutual understanding that the PhD once graduated will pursue his/her career with the company in question.
  • For student candidates for a CIFRE - who already possess a diploma (from an engineering school, a school of commerce or management) but not, as yet, their Master's degree in research - they must complete their Master's degree before the end of the first year of the CIFRE, unless they have been awarded an exemption by decision of the scientific advisory council of the University where their doctoral studies are registered.
  • The host laboratory will be located in a university, a school of engineering, commerce..., a public research establishment; it may even be located outside France, provided that assurance is given (as for labs in France) that it can effectively and efficiently monitor and assess the PhD candidates' training in high-level research activities.
