Placements (engineer)
Internships in companies are a key component of the UTC engineering curriculum, forming an integral part of the educational project. Fourteen months are dedicated to discovering and understanding the business world, both in France and abroad.
Core Curriculum Internships
Internships in France or abroad
Students in the core curriculum must complete a compulsory 4‑week internship, designed to provide a better understanding of the engineering profession.
Discovering industrial reality or professional interculturality
The main purpose of the internship is to put students in direct contact with industrial reality. It allows them not only to apply certain concepts learned at university, but also to develop their ability to work within a team contributing to production design or organization.
› During the core curriculum (from high school graduation up to 2 years post-graduation), students may complete two short internships, of which at least one must be validated:
- a technical worker internship of 4 weeks. The primary aim of this internship is to expose students to industrial reality. This is their first encounter with professional life, helping them understand the human and organizational aspects of their future role as engineers. Students must hold an actual position and participate in operational tasks.
- a 4‑week internship abroad. The main goal of this internship is to broaden perspectives and challenge preconceived notions through professional immersion in a different culture and language. The internship report takes the form of an intercultural analysis written in a foreign language taught at UTC (German, English, Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese).
Internship Equivalency
If you have already completed a worker internship during your first year of studies, you may apply for an equivalency. You must submit a report along with grades and comments from the internship defense.
Compensation / Allowances
As a general rule, an agreement is established between the university and the host company. Students are compensated for their work, either through an allowance or a salary, depending on company standards. During this period, students are subject to the company’s internal regulations, particularly regarding confidentiality.
HuTech Curriculum Internships
These internships last 24 weeks and take place in a professional environment, whether in the public or private sector.
Objectives
- Apply acquired skills in the field by contributing to a technological project with societal relevance.
- Prepare for entry into a specialization track (GB, GP, GI, GSU, or IM, and possibly a master’s program) through professional experience in a company or institution within the targeted engineering domain.
The internship culminates in a written report, part of which must address the broader issues of the field, and an oral defense.
Comparison with other long UTC internships
Although it takes place at the end of year 3 (semester 6), this internship is quite similar to the year‑4 internship (course unit “TN09”) in terms of academic outcomes.
A dedicated monitoring system is set up, supervised by at least one faculty member. The aim is to support the student (and the company, if requested) in reflecting and problematizing their experience, while also enriching the HuTech curriculum with real-world case studies, especially during these initial internships.
Compensation / Allowances
As with other internships, an agreement is signed between the university and the host company. Students receive either an allowance or a salary according to company norms. They must comply with company rules and maintain confidentiality.
Specialization Internships
Applying acquired knowledge
During their engineering cycle, students must complete two 6‑month internships in order to put into practice the knowledge acquired during their studies. They are expected to take personal responsibility for a specific project in line with their specialization:
- an assistant engineer internship during the third semester,
- a final-year project internship during the last semester.
Currently, more than 2,500 industrial partners in France and abroad (major corporations and SMEs alike) host UTC interns.
Internship Equivalency
If you have worked for at least one year as a senior technician in a field related to your program at UTC, you may obtain an equivalency for the assistant engineer internship. Other cases may be considered depending on your previous academic and professional background.
Compensation / Allowances
As with other internships, an agreement is signed between the university and the host company. Students are remunerated via allowance or salary depending on company policy. They must comply with company regulations, particularly regarding confidentiality.
Partnership Services
The Training-Industry Relations Department (PRFE) supports students in building their career plans and professional skills by fostering numerous interactions with companies:
- meetings with HR directors and recruiters,
- testimonials from engineers about their careers,
- round-table discussions,
- interviews with professionals,
- company visits,
- …
It also assists students in their search for internships or work-study contracts by providing access to a wide range of company offers and guidance on job-search techniques (CVs, cover letters, interviews).
